In 2007, the Mississippi Legislature approved the transfer of seventy-five acres of beautiful, rolling pastureland located between Newton and Hickory, Mississippi, along the south side of Interstate 20. The land was transferred from Mississippi State University to the State Veterans Affairs Board to establish a State Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A federal VA State Cemetery Program Grant will fund 100% of the construction and basic equipping of the cemetery.

The cemetery will provide services to all honorably discharged Veterans, as well as to spouses and eligible dependent children. Five hundred interments per year are expected.
